The Boys are back in town!

story and photos by Ian Gibson

One of the eleven that found the back of the net

Elliot Lake Centennial Arena, Friday January 15, 2010, Elliot Lake Bobcats 11, Thessalon Algoma Avalanche 4.

It certainly looks like the Festive Turkey/Jet lag has worn off as the fast skating hard hitting team we grew to know before the Holidays returned to the ice tonight.  The team with the new additions of #18 Cory Marquardt and #10 Tyler Ryan took it to the Avalanche tonight to let them know that although they were coming off a victory over the Powassan Dragons and holding both the Bobcats (last week) and the Rattlers to a 1 goal loss, the old Cats were back in town.

The Avalanche goal tender # 1 Justin Hogsden seemed to stop everything until 8:32 of the first period when #23 Patrick Mirga scored from #17 Branislav Jankovic and #13 Roman Jurak.  That started off a rash of goals allowing the Cats to finish the period with four unaswered!

The second period was similar to the first whereas there was a lot of fast skating, hard checking from both teams.  This period the cats scored three more before the Avalanche # 3 Matus Hurda finally got one by #30 Blake Robinson.  The Cats got one more with 30 seconds to go making the score a lopsided eight to one by the end of the period.

Coach Leonard decided on a goalie change for the third and put #31 Dustin Christie in.  Both goal tenders faced eleven shots and both had three get by them.  From my vantage point at the far end of the rink at least two of the three goals scored on Dustin were good goals, one clean and the other a great tip over his shoulder, I did not see the third one.

The near 300 fans who were at the game tonight were treated to a great game for the Bobcats and I would be remiss if I did not mention #12 David Sefcik who managed five points tonight with two goals and three assist.
