Bobcats start off 2010 with a 4 to 3 victory
over the Avalanche
story and photos by Ian Gibson

Great saves like this could not stop the Cats from coming up on the plus side
Sunday January 02, 2010, Centennial Arena, Elliot Lake Bobcats
4, Thessalon Algoma Avalanche 3.
Like an old car that has been sitting in cold weather for three
weeks, the Cats once started, were sluggish. The Avalanche had (sort of
had) a practice by playing a game against the Oro Medonte 77's last night,
however misfortune was their lot as their bus broke down and they didn't get to
Elliot Lake until 6 a.m. this morning. Both teams were suffering from
either fatigue or not having laced up for 21 days. The Cats fell behind
when the Avalanche scored two unanswered goals in the first period. There
was a flicker of the Bobcats that we all know, at the end of the first when the
passes started to click and the speed picked up a little. The second
period was a little faster version of the first, however this time goals by
Johnson and Barrows went unanswered and the teams went into the dressing room
tied! In the third period the sluggishness once again showed as neither
team were making any great hits. The Cats pulled ahead with 8 minutes to
go when #21 Eduard Sedivy found the back of the net after carrying the puck 2/3rds of
the way up the ice. A bright spot in the third was when #13 Roman Jurak, unselfishly
passed the puck to his winger #7 Chad Barrows for him to score as they both closed in on
an empty net. Never ones to give up the Avalanche scored with one second to go
to bring the score to a respectable 4/3.
The Avalanche goalie #1 Justin Hogsden, played a great game as
can be seen by the above photo. The Cats goalie #30 Blake Robinson was a
little loose, however came up tough when he stopped a penalty shot by #12 Thomas
Stewart in the second period. Shots on goal were 32 by the Bobcats to 39
by the Avalanche.
