Grind grind grind grind grind
all the way to a close O/T loss to Shield
story and photos by Ian Gibson

A 'friendly discussion' over the disposition of the goalie
Saturday October 10, 2009, The Elliot Lake
Bobcats hosted the South Muskoka Shield. The two clubs are both very fast
skating teams who treated the approximately 200 fans to a 'ground-out battle' on
the ice where the lead changed hands once and the game was brought to a
tie with 59 seconds remaining on the clock!
It wasn't that the Bobcats offense was amiss in
this game, they actually out shot the Shield each period (48 to 37 for the
game), no, the loss came on a couple of errant turn-over's, as well as our goal
tending cadre running hot and cold. There just does not seem to be any
consistency with our goalies. We should not have to be in the lead by six plus
goals in order to ensure a win, that just doesn't seem feasible. I know
that some of you reading this say "when we win it's the team and when we lose
it's the goalies", this is not necessarily so. There are times when the
goalie plays well - (Friday nights game for instance when the losing goalie
played well but was simply beaten by "clean" goals). There are other times
when the defense fail to play their positions.
Yesterday afternoon the five minute overtime
started with a man in the box leading to a 1 minute and 23 seconds of a four on
three situation which the Cats handled well. The winning goal was scored
after the man came out of the box with 1:40 left on the clock.
By the way, the Shield coaching staff waited
until late in the third period to attempt to charge the Bobcats with having too
many men dressed. The crowd around me was concerned that there wasn't a
penalty assessed for delay of game when it was found that there was no foul!!!
Like I have said before if I knew the rules better.........etc.
Outstanding play came from #13 Roman Yurak, #21
Edward Sedivy for the Bobcats and #9 Dylan Sontag and #17 James Cook from the
Shield.
I'll bet the next game will be great to watch!
