Fifty Penalties
Need more be said!

story and photos by Ian Gibson

Excellent Goaltending by #1 Matt Perry kept the Avalanche off of the Score Board for two and two thirds of the game.

Elliot Lake Centennial Arena, Sunday February 28, 2010; Elliot Lake Bobcats 10, Thessalon Algoma Avalanche 2.

The headline has a lot of meaning for this game.  Fifty penalties, I mean come on folks what was going on tonight, was it a full moon, did the goons come out to play?  The referees tried, unsuccessfully to try to nip the chippyness in the bud. I know I've asked this before, but why do these young men have to try and fight their way out of a loss?  What does it prove?  It is not hockey!!  I would like to point out that a lot of spectators left after the end of the second period. Enough said.

The game could have been a whole lot closer had it not been for very hot goalie #1 Matt Perry!  The Avalanche threw no less than 35 shots at him with only two managing to get by late in the third period. In scoring their ten, the Cats fired 45 at the Avalanche two goalies. Although the Cats performed as expected, score wise, the star of this game was Matt!  The GMHL box score web page does not allow for the goal tenders to be a star, even though they may have had a shut out. So congrats Matt, you played very well!
