One Down Two to Go, uh, Series that is!

story and photos by Ian Gibson

Tom Rush #26 was responsible for 3 goals and 1 assist which helped retire the Avalanche for the Season

Good sports in spite of the aggression displayed in the last three games

Centennial Arena, Elliot Lake ON, Friday March 5, 2010; Elliot Lake Bobcats 9, Thessalon Algoma Avalanche 3.

The 200 odd fans in the stands this evening were treated to two periods of hockey.  Once again the Avalanche started out in a flurry by putting the first goal between the pipes just after the mid point of the first period.  The Avalanche's #12 Thomas Stewart always a threat figured in all three of the tallies by his team, assisting on two and scoring one (in the second period).  At the end of the first a happy Avalanche team had the lead two to one.  Things were looking grim for the Cats when the Avalanche scored their third goal at the 12:27 mark of the second.  The Avalanche were feeling quite chipper, when, with less than a minute to go in the period, Tom Rush came to the fore and scored two goals 13 seconds apart to cool their jets!  He must have still felt the rush (if you'll pardon a bad pun), because he found the back of the net at 15:58 in the third period.  This was the first time the Cats took the lead which they would not relinquish.  Of course once the Cats got three goal ahead, things got a little out of hand, but not as bad as before.

This win retired the Avalanche for the Season, it also kept up the winning streak.  The Cats have now won twenty consecutive games and now face the Deseronto Storm in the next series.
